Susan G. Nightmare

What's left to say? The non-profit public relations disaster of the century. An anti-choice Conservative Republican hardliner, Karen Handel who ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Georgia, even with Sarah "Quitter" Palin's endorsement, joined Susan G. Komen for the Cure, elite of elite medical cause non-profits, as Senior Vice President for Public Policy in April of last year. Public Policy is exactly where this decision to cut all funding to Planned Parenthood resides, evidently approved by the board, and Handel is known for saying that she is "pro-life, I do not support the mission of Planned Parenthood."

A mission, by the way, where no Susan G. Komen funds go to abortions. In fact, of all of Planned Parenthood's activities, only 3% go to abortion services. The rest:
It's been confirmed by three sources to reporter Jeffrey Goldberg that this is entirely a political decision, and I wonder if in concert with the GOP Representative from Florida who opened a bullshit investigation into Planned Parenthood. They've made the same decision to cut funding to any organizations doing and work with embryonic stem cells.

Here's the good news: Planned Parenthood turns out to be extremely popular for their good works at a low cost. In fact, this may be what Tumblr was invented for -- check out the growing number of posts (160+ when I last checked) at Planned Parenthood Saved Me.

The founder of the organization lost her sister, Susan G. Komen, to breast cancer, and is a survivor herself, Nancy Goodman Brinker. She and her then husband were major George W. Bush contributors in Dallas, where the foundation is based, and served twice in the GWB Administration, also known for it's brilliant ideologically-based decisions.

Brinker's condescendingly title "Straight Talk" statement video in response to the defunding and her appearance on an unusually tough Andrea Mitchell, who admits knowing Brinker socially, are somewhat insane. She's got a corporate-speak message honed down but it's a stonewall strategy, starting with the misleading angle that they're still fulfilling the last three quarters they have pledged Planned Parenthood, so they haven't really done what they said they're doing:

It's a type of corporate pretzel logic that no longer works in public communication -- the Silicon Valley guys, with their more typical candor have seen to that. The public has the ear for the truth now. That's why Mitt's a disaster, and Obama's still a breath of fresh air.

So if Planned Parenthood donations are up - including a $250,000 matching donation from New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg - and SGK has permanently rebranded itself in a way that will eliminate (according to what longtime donors themselves are saying online and on the street) a huge reliable donor base, hopefully people will give their money to another breast cancer prevention organization. And I know there are more.

Or directly to Planned Parenthood - over 700,000 breast cancer exams annually.
